1394 Net Adapter

What is this "1394 Net Adapter" I see in my Network Connections list?

Can I use this to connect to other computers? Would I have to buy a convertor to connect this to an Ethernet network?

"1394" refers to IEEE standard 1394. The more commonly recognized name for IEEE 1394 is FireWire.

The 1394 Net Adapter can be used to network computers together, but Ethernet is a more conventional choice.

You can connect two computers together using a FireWire (1394) cable. You can connect more than two computers if you use a FireWire hub.

With all of the USB to Ethernet adapters currently available, I am somewhat surprised that no 1394 to Ethernet adapters are currently being manufactured.

The rumor is that Microsoft is going to drop support for TCP/IP over 1394 in the production release of Microsoft Vista.

FireWire is still a fairly popular interface for external storage devices, camera's, camcorders, etc...
