Exclamation Question - About PPPoE Connection

a few informations :

1. I used a LAN based Internet ( in fact still using ) just through tcp/ip, not through PPPoE.

2. I am using DU Meter for measuring my b/w.

3. Recently my ISP switched their network to PPPoE.

When My ISP was just tcp/ip based ethernet, i selected only LAN CARD (NIC) interface to check outgoing and incoming b/w and that was accurate.

now when they switched to PPPoE, checking NIC interface for b/w ain't giving proper value. DU Meter is showing much much larger value than the actual speed I am getting (like I am feeling that currently my b/w is 8-10 KBPS maxm, where as LAN card interface showing 30/40 KBPS. ) . I can get the right value if i select the dial up interface in DU Meter.

well , I can understand that , PPPoE is sort of dial up connection , so it can give right value. but my question is why lan card interface showing such high b/w ?

even , I have seen that, while doing no work at all ( all process are off , no connections , ensured by netstat ) , my lan card interface showing a high D/L value like 5-7 KBPS.

what are these packets ? From where they are coming ? Whats their significance ?

sorry for my bad english. If I am not clear enough , then please tell me which part is not clear. I will try to expand that part more.

Thanx in advance.

Regards

eeeboy

Sorry eeeboy, I'm afraid networks are not my forte. And too...I've been slammed with work at my other job.

Lemme do a lil Googling and see what I can found out.

eeeboy,

First..packets are bits of info that you PC is receiving & giving to other PC's (web servers that host web sites.

There are several things you can do to get an accurate D/L reading.
Here's what you do.

Go to RUN from you start menu. A little box will pop up. Type in: Command

Another box will appear.

Mine say & most PC's say...C:\Windows\Desktop>
Type in after Desktop>ping www.yahoo.com

Then you will see a bunch of data (don't worry about this). When this "pinging" is done, you will see packets sent, packets recieved and percentage lost (% lost). This will also tell you your TRUE speed. Of course, the reading is in "mili-seconds". The "higher"..the faster.

You can also D/L "DrTCP" at: http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp

I use it all the time...BUT..read up on this program before you use it.

Hope this helps you !!

drtcp ?

what this program is for actually ?

I had to use this software once to set my ethernet interface MTU to 1400 ( MSN network requirement).

well , I am afraid , you little mis understood my post's point. I said , I can get the true value if DU Meter check the dial up interface ( I guess more specifically it's checking PPP ). Now whats the excess data that are coming through my NIC even though I don't do any work. is this any PPPoE configuration data ?
