Belkin router problem

I have the a F5D7632UK4A Belkin router.
Connected to this by a ethernet cable is an xbox 360, and a desktop pc via a Belkin wireless adaptor. The 360 has always been able to go on line with out any problems, but everytime I tried to go on line with the PC I would have to repair the connection as windows would have allocated it a default ip address starting 169. instead of one starting 192.
Repairing the connection would work and I would then be able to go on line. As of this week I'm unable to repair the connection and all I get is a 169 ip address. I have a lap top with a belkin wireless card which does the same thing, but if the laptop is connected via a ethernet cable like the 360 it works fine. I have tried ipconfig/release and renew with out any joy. Is there something on the routers configuration page that I need to change?

Thanks in advance

The XBOX probably doesn't have this issue because it's not wirelessly connected. :p

The 169.x.x.x addresses are auto-configuration IP addresses. This tells us that DHCP isn't working.

DHCP most likely isn't the problem though. DHCP is most likely not working because something that DHCP depends upon is breaking.

Even though this symptom is occuring on two different devices, I am still leaning towards this being a PC problem instead of a wireless router problem.

When you see these 169.x.x.x address, what do you see when you go into the View Wireless Networks screen? Is your network on the list?

Before doing much troubleshooting, I would reinstall the drivers for the Belkin NICs. That may make the issue disappear without us ever knowing what the issue was.

When I view the wireless networks I can see my network!
I have tried Ipconfig/release and renew.
I've tried clearing the ARP cache.
Also tried flushing the DNS????
Belkin have advised to try a different channel on the router. Is this going to help?
They have also advised me to specify an ip address instead of having one manually allocated.

Thanks in advance!

This is good news. This means that you are not seeing an RF issue -- at least not at this very moment.

That rules out one entire category of possible issues.

These are all good things to try.

Next, I would try to delete the network adapter. Go to the Network Connection screen in Control Panel, highlight the network adapter, and delete it. Then, re-install the network adapter driver.

No. That would only help if you were having an RF issue.

That would be a good fix, if the issue was DHCP. As we have not ruled out DHCP as a source of the problem, I would give that a try.
