Clearing ARP Cache Problem

I am having problems trying to clear my ARP Cache.
i just noticed this problem when i tried to access a remote desktop connection to my work server for the first time. It was suggested to me to try and "release my ip address" by going to networkconnections in my control panel, clicking on the support tab and then clicking repair.
I have tried this and i keep getting the error message "windows was unable to repair the problem because it was unable to clear the arp cache" I have tried going to the command prompt and typing in " netsh interface ip delete arpcache" it says ok but when i go to the repair button in my network connections i'm still getting the same error.

Any suggestions?

This is a wee bit of a Windows bug.

To workaround this bug:

Click the <Start> button
Click the <Control Panel> button
Switch to "Classic View" if you are in "Category View"
Click <Administrative Tools>
Click <Computer Management>
Doubleclick <Services and Applications>
Doubleclick <Services>
Scroll down to <Routing and Remote Services>
Doubleclick <Routing and Remote Services>
Examine the "Startup Type"
The options are "Automatic", "Manual", and "Disabled"
Set the "Startup Type" to "Disabled"
Click the <OK> button

This Windows bug should not appear any longer for you.

Thanks so much for your response! That seems to have fixed my problem.
I was wondering if i could ask you if you would know what might have caused this?
Would it have anything to do with the remote desktop being installed?
The reason i ask is because i'm uneasy about trying to access the remote desktop connection again because i don't want to have to go through all of this again.

Thanks again and i really appreciate all of your help!!

That's a very good question. I don't know what would have enabled that option. I doubt that Remote Desktop would have done it, but there's only one way to be certain of that...

I've heard that some malware does this, so you might want to install Spybot Search & Destroy or AdAware.

I've also heard that this option is enabled by default on some copies of Windows. That would be pretty weird.

NETworked pc cant connect to net

Hi
I got a tweak xp book put of the library!
Services in computer administration.
I disabled most of what they said to, to try and fasten pc startup (cos damn its slow)
Now the baby pc can not get internet pages or connection to net.
The big pc could not clear arp cache, I followed the advice here and that worked with the error message I had here, but baby still no net, it sends packets out but 0 come in.
I have put in the ip address, but it keeps trying to renew the ip address and cant, please help.If i unplug the red cable from back it recognises that so its not a cable or ethernet prob (I dont think)
Is there a default button for the services? Wish there was a reset to defaults for everything!
Poor kids are going mental with out net, and I'm up all night...
Thanks
Actually nowbaby cant register the dns address

Clearing your ARP cache won't help you -- you need to reenable whatever you disabled that broke your system.

Did you disable "DHCP Client"? If so -- set that one back to Automatic.

What does the IPCONFIG command tell you?

What error messages are you receiving?

Talking Thanks Will

I posted a message this morning about the baby pc not having interenet.
My kids were jumping for joy today!
there were two problems, one was i needed to make the arp cache thing (never ever heard of it before) on the main pc work, (got solution from previously written thread). The baby pc did have the dhcp disabled, though I dont know why because I hadn't changed it. Anyway Will, thank you so much for responding and having a great pc brain
I want to give you a MASSIVE THANK YOU !!!
