how to hide my IP from downloadable or java-based games??

Hi all,
How can I hide my true location from a site which I am playing a game at?
They have 2 options to play, one is to download their software (which I'm guessing gives them all kinds of snooping abilities?),
The other is to download their java appelet every time I want to play.
I don't know if its java or javascript, but I'm guessing it would be the more invasive one.
BTW I will be using a Cable connection for this. Lets say I live in NY and so my IP will clearly show I'm using that Cable company from NY.
Will using a proxy from LA make them think I am in california?
Or will they be able to see my true connection due to their using Java/Javascript/activeX OR from their software installed on my computer if I use that instead?
What can I do to hide the region I live in?
Thanks very much!

Unfortunately, there is no good way for you to tell what the people running the game are seeing.

If you are running their code on your PC, either in .exe or .java formats, they have the technical ability to find out where you are on the Internet.

However, they might not be using that ability. They might just be recording the IP address they see on their end of the connection. If that is the case, then a proxy solution could work.

If it's really important, rent a server in Los Angeles and use RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) to connect to it remotely.
