FiOS is a new service offered by Verizon. It stands for Fiber Optic Service and it a much faster connection to the internet. It's not as fast a a T1 line but it blows cable and DSL outta the water!

I don't think I'm going to see a HUGE difference in performance until I start game playing again or downloading some big files. It is however much faster than the DSL I had before, with zero increase in price... for now.

There are three packages with FiOS...

UP / DOWN speed
Up to 5 Mbps/2 Mbps - $34.95/month
Up to 15 Mbps/2 Mbps - $44.95/month
Up to 30 Mbps/5 Mbps - $179.95/month

The one thing they don't mention is the fact that with FiOS you can lose phone service if the power goes out. Under normaly circumstance your phone would continue to work if you lose power to the rest of the house. BUT, with FiOS it's all connected and what they have done to combat this is install a 6 hour battery to run the phone if the power goes.

They have a safe guard of sorts from loosing power completely to the phones by having the battery shut itself off if it's power drops to 60%. What this does is allow you to conserve power for those emergency calls. So, if power went out in the home and after a time the batter turns itself off, I can turn the battery back on, make a call and if I want, turn it back off again. It's a little weird quite frankly but hopefully they'll get it worked out as the technology develops.

The curious thing the tech said was how Verizon has really bet their whole bank roll on FiOS.... millions and millions of dollars.
