Single Mode fiber cables are made of a single strand of glass fiber; Multi Mode fiber cables are made of a number of glass fibers.

Single Mode fibers have a standard diameter of 9 microns; Multi mode fiber bundles are usually 50 or 62.5 microns in diameter.

Single Mode fiber is able to carry higher bandwidths of data over longer distances; Multi Mode fiber is able to work with less expensive light sources.
