There are two types of multimode fiber, step index and graded index.

In both types of multimode fiber, the rays of light are reflected back into the core by the cladding boundary.

In step index fiber, the light is relected back at sharp angles, while in graded index fiber, the light is reflected back in a range of less sharp angles.

Graded index fiber has less multi-path dispersion than step index fiber.
