Have to tried to change the listening port from the default Gnutella listening port of 6346?

You do this in LimeWire under <Tools><Options><Advanced><Firewall Config><Listening Port>.

eMule is an alternative P2P client that works reasonably well behind firewalls and NAT.

In eMule, you configure the ports under <Preferences><Connections>.

I've been through this at University before

In short, I wouldn't go messing with their systems. Once they find out they will really come down on you.

Technically speaking, you most likely cant do it, as I tried it but unless you can access their routers you will have trouble.

Will may have a different view though :P

I cheated a bit. I looked up prime21's IP address and reversed it to a DNS name to find the name of his college.

I then visited their web site and reviewed their IT policy to make sure prime21 wasn't violating an official policy.

By my reading of their IT security policy, he will be OK.

I'd love to hear if this actually worked, I had never though of doing it this way.

Who would have thought reading an IT policy would do some good

I would try random ones. 22, 25, 80, 443, 1000, 2000, ....

It would have to be set to a port that no other service uses, is this correct?
What would happen if it was set to a port that something else was using?

If a program attempts to bind to a port, and that port is already bound to another program, the attempt will fail.

Yes, as I thought.

I try to keep a list of ports that all my programs use as I often have to assign port forward to my router, and if I overlap it will cause chaos
