Securing Network Please Help

Hello. So I have a laptop downstaries connect via cabel to my wireless router. Then upstaires my computer is connected via the USB adapter. However anyone can join the network and just use the Internet.

The connection is not secure. I have asked for help many times. They always tell me to add a number URL into IE browser for the settings. However nothing shows up.

My router is a Belkin MIMO G Plus Wireless Router.

I don't know a lot about wireless network but think there's an IP address you're supposed to load in the URL box that'll take you to the console page. Is this the number they're telling you to use: 192.168.1.1 ??

Generally, it's 192.168.2.1 . Then you have to log into the router with an ID & Password. Usually if you haven't changed it, the default will be something like... ID: admin PW: admin . Once in a while the password will be 1234

@ Lyte. That is the IP everyone as given me. Doesn't work.

@ Canis. It works. Thanks.

Now I know how to get on that. I went and done the setting someone suggested me. The computer it#s connected via cabel to had the Internet and my computer didn't. I added the MAC Address to the allow list as well.

I default resetted the the settings.

Can somebody give me some suggestions please?

Where'd you get that IP cuz when I Googled the router I kept getting 192.168.1.1

set up WPA on the network. I don't know exactly as I don't use router, but try to Google up that topic

WPA = Wi-Fi Protected Access

Per Wikipedia...

yeah, I know ^^

I mean, try to google up how to set up that. And please note, older wireless card or some built-on-notebook wireless chip can't access WPA-protected network.

Every router i've ever worked on is 192.168.2.1 . I think it also depends on what type of setting your router is on. I.E PPPoE, DHCP, etc.

The IP actually depends on the device, the manufacture and what you already have connected to your network. All LinkSys routers will default to 192.168.1.1, while all D-Link and Netgear will default to 192.168.0.1, while SMC and Belkin will default to 192.168.2.1, if they are available, meaning that your modem has not already taken that IP, or another device on your network.

Here is your Routers manuals, you should read them, and anything that came with your Router, mainly the doc on the CD, as they will explain how to secure your connection.

Weird... every linksys router i've ever owned (i'm linksys biased) has been 192.168.2.1 .

I have 2 different Linksys routers and they're both 192.168.1.1. Pretty sure it's their default.

SMC and Belkin brands commonly use 192.168.2.1.

i've had 2 WRT54G's and this new WRT310N, and they're all 192.168.2.1 lol

you probably have, by no doing of your own, the modem set to .1.1, that was probably the default by the manufacturer.

Well I followed instructions like I told you then restarted the router to default. I then had a look around. Done the settings myself and in a certain order. I know have a secure network.

Only my computers can connect.
