Slow internet :(

Lately i have noticed my internet speed is getting slower and slower. I have DSL and it used to be really fast, now pages take ages to load.
Could it be something on my computer causing this??

Often this symptom is a result of spyware or adware.

I would run Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware and see if the symptoms improve.

It can also be a result of a virus or worm.

I would also check my connection performance at DSLReports.

Also I feel that keeping my computer clean by regularly performing Disk Cleanup and registry cleanup, and also cache and history would improve the performance of the system to good extent.

And be careful with Spybot S & D. Earlier I tried to use the advanced features and i mishanlded it so much that I had to reinstall the OS. It's a good software but use the advanced features with care.

Having a firewall also makes your browsing a bit slow.

I found considerable improvement on speed when I disabled the firewall, but without a firewall it's tough for the OS to survive when it's in a network

I can't say I have ever noticed my net being slow due to a firewall.

Is that really true?

Might be an illusion, but still as per the definition , firewall sits in *between* your PC and the network so there might be a little overhead, i guess.

Just because having a firewall installs an additional process running on the system, it might make you feel a little degradation in performance otherwise its all fine.

Slow Machine

Just a few things. Make certain your machine is free from temp files. Check for viruses and spyware. Check all your settings. Clean your registry.

There are many free programs out there to aid you in these steps. I'm certain you already have some for viruses and spyware.

For simply cleaning your machine, I would recommend using Windows Washer by Webroot and EZ Clean by ToniArts. Good luck!

Having spyware and such and slow down your computer/internet by a great deal. Ive seen it happen where it would take 1 minute+ to load on a Cable modem.
