The steps to change an IP address are different for every operating system or type of network device.

Let's assume for the moment that you are using Microsoft Windows XP.

Most Windows XP system gets their IP address from a DHCP server. If you are using DHCP you get your IP address, you can request an IP address by opening a CMD shell and using the command ipconfig /renew.

Most DHCP servers will remember your last IP address and issue that same IP address to you again.

If you are not using DHCP -- or if you would like to stop using DHCP -- here are the steps to manually change your IP address under Windows XP:
  1. Click the <Start> button
  2. Click the <Control Panel> menu item
  3. Click the <Network Connections> icon
  4. Right-click on the network connection for which you wish to change the IP address
  5. Click on the <Properties> menu item
  6. Click on <Internet Protocol>
  7. Click the <Properties> button
  8. Click to check the button next "Use the following IP address:"
  9. Enter your new IP addresss
  10. Enter your subnet mask
  11. Enter your default gateway
  12. Click to check the button next "Use the following DNS server addresses:"
  13. Enter your preferred DNS server
  14. Enter your alternate DNS server
  15. Click the <OK> button
  16. Click the <Close> button

And on linux open a command prompt and...

ifconfig eth0 x.x.x.x netmask 255.255.255.0

Now why do MS have to make things so complicated in the aid of being "user friendly"? :???:
