The steps to change an IP address are different for every operating system or type of network device.
Let's assume for the moment that you are using Microsoft Windows XP.
Most Windows XP system gets their IP address from a
DHCP server. If you are using DHCP you get your IP address, you can request an IP address by opening a CMD shell and using the command
ipconfig /renew.
Most DHCP servers will remember your last IP address and issue that same IP address to you again.
If you are not using DHCP -- or if you would like to stop using DHCP -- here are the steps to manually change your IP address under Windows XP:
- Click the <Start> button
- Click the <Control Panel> menu item
- Click the <Network Connections> icon
- Right-click on the network connection for which you wish to change the IP address
- Click on the <Properties> menu item
- Click on <Internet Protocol>
- Click the <Properties> button
- Click to check the button next "Use the following IP address:"
- Enter your new IP addresss
- Enter your subnet mask
- Enter your default gateway
- Click to check the button next "Use the following DNS server addresses:"
- Enter your preferred DNS server
- Enter your alternate DNS server
- Click the <OK> button
- Click the <Close> button
