There is an ip address conflict with another system on my network

I am getting the error message which starts "The system detected an address conflict for IP address ..."

What are the best ways to troubleshoot this error?

First of all , What kind of IP management you are using?

static [ manually put ip ,gateway, dns into box]

or

dynamic[dhcp i.e. you dont have to put anything or just ipconfig /renew command in command prompt ]?

If its static , then check these

Possible Causes :

1. You have entered any wrong ip address i mean ip address other than yours.

2. Some other people on your network can do the same thing.

If its your fault then correct it. If its not your fault , then let the network administrator know this issue. Its his duty to trace the faulty machine in network.Nothing to do with you.

If its dynamic system i mean dhcp service , then I am not sure. It may be some server configuration error or any server-client interaction error in network layer.

And.. I guess Will gonna give you some nice and real working advice soon. So you can also wait for him !

Great reply eeeboy!

The only thing I would add is that you can sometimes look at the hexadecimal MAC address of the conflicting node to determine what kind of device it is.

Find the first three bytes of the MAC address and look it up in the IEEE OUI and Company_id Assignments Database. It will tell you who manufactured the offending device, which can help you track it down.

IP address conflicts usually occur when people mix manual IP addressing and DHCP and when people forget about oddball IP devices such as network printers.
