Forget Skype, Gizmo is here!

Having been in the VoIP market for years, I can't believe that eBAY paid 2.6 BILLION (with a big B) for something as crazy as Skype! I use a VoIP-SIP based service called GIZMO (www.gizmoproject.com). They have much better software, even allowing you to be your own NSA and record your phone calls; voice mail, and even free incoming calls from the PSTN (if your caller is willing to use a PSTN call that may be toll to them). They have 800, and 1 cent/min calls to US/Canada. The quality is excellent IF you have a solid cable or DSL connection. Not even bad with satellite except for the 480 msec delay due to uisng GEOS sats.

Anyway, just thought that people might want to try something that shows how anything on the Internet can be duplicated, improved, and enhanced without spending 2.6Billion. We will be studying eBay's snafu for years in our MBA programs. ;-)

Gizmo is based on the industry-standard SIP protocol, which is an improvement over Skype.

Gizmo also charges less for PC-to-Phone calls than Skype does.

Plus, Gizmo gives you free voicemail and free call recording.

All-in-all, Gizmo looks like a clear winner.

Hmm, I haven't look into Gizmo yet, but it looks good so far. I mainly use Skype to call family in Canada (free landline calls til the end of year), however, some connection issues have risen. I am going to test Gizmo this weekend, this could become the replacement.

Hello,

As SIP is not standardised completely, do you think that Gizmo can do well than skype? SIP have problems in traversing through firewall and NAT whereas the signalling protocol used by skype can over come this problem.

with regards

SIP is standardized enough to be interoperable. IETF protocols are constantly evolving, so they can never represent truly static standards.

Lots of protocols, such as FTP, require special handling by firewalls and NAT devices. That's just something that is expected of any modern firewall.
