VoIP and Torrents

I would like to have a program that detects when you use VoIP and closes torrent ports and restarts when the VoIP call is finished.

I have only a 512/128 connection and download torrents all the time. To use the phone I have to stop the torrents and restart after the call.

Software to do this would be great. Any ideas, please?

Why do you need to close your torrent downloads with you use VoIP? Why can you not do both simultaneously? You have enough bandwidth to do so.

Why are you stopping the torrents manually instead of letting them fail -- if indeed they do fail?

What torrent client are you currently using?

What network hardware are you currently using? I am wondering if we should be talking about QoS.

What connection type have you got?

To my understanding, a cable connection has separate upload and download channels, so as long as you have the Torrent software throttled back a little you should not have a problem with VOIP.

However, ADSL and similar connections do not work in the same way. If you are uploading at near-maximum, you can guarantee that your download speed will be affected and vice versa.

If you are running cable, which your connection speeds ratio would suggest, as long as you have your maximums set a good 10k/s less than maximum then you shouldn't be having a problem.

I run voice communications parallel with torrents and the only problems I encounter are when my Torrent transfers are near-maximum.

Perhaps try maximum upload of 10kb/s and maximum download of 30kb/s. On a 512 connection, you're only ever going to get around 50kb/s, but if you are nearing the ceiling then of course other services are going to be affected.

If your connection is 512kb down and 128kb up, you should be fine.

The most bandwidth that a VoIP CODEC should use is 64kb.

There seem to be lots of issues with the Billion 7402VL, some of which can be resolved by upgrading the firmware.

You might also contact the Billion Online Helpdesk and ask them if there are any additional setting you should change to make the router handle QoS better.
