Thumbs down What do they mean by saying the you're experiencing a high-open end circuit?

I have one of those D-Link modems for my dsl connection. Everything seems to be physically connected properly from my computer to the modem to the phone line. Problem is when someone picks up the hand set (off hook), my internet connections gets cut off. I’ve called up my ISP’s tech support people and they referred me to my telco’s tech support and have them handle the issue since I’m experiencing a high-open end circuit. Can anybody tell me what a high-open end circuit is and if has something to do with the tip and ring of the circuit thru the telco?

Thanks, much appreciated.

Do you have those little DSL filters on your DSL line? When a phone line is in use, the voltage on the line changes. The filter protects the DSL line from being affected by the voltage change.

Is your filter missing, or could it be faulty?

If not, it's a telco issue.

I am not familiar with the term "high-end open circuit." I mean, an open circuit is an open circuit. It's difficult to imagine different types of open circuits. And, of course, if you really did have an open circuit, your DSL would never work!

Firstly, thanks for the reply…
Yup I do have a filter, everything physically connected properly. Actually it’s been working for a couple of months. Nothing added, like another landline phone or cordless phone. Just happen to notice it days back. Although, I’ll double check the functionality of my filter and test it with my friends filter.

Another friend of mine told me that the term is used by ISP tech support people to indicate a high resistance – open end circuit experienced on the telco’s end.

I appreciate the reply and I’ll check on any possible faults on my end.

Thank you.

I've had filters go faulty before. Have you ever had this working? Or just got it? There's more chance that a filter is faulty if it's arrived faulty.

If possible use a different filter and connect to the closest socket to where the line enters the building from outside, in other words don't plug it into an extension.

I'm not sure but maybe fax machines can cause problems as well? If you've got anything like that maybe unplug it and try.

A high resistance open is a tip and ring problem. To put it simply, it means that one of the two wires in the cable could have a loose connector in a slice somewhere in the cable system, or the wire could have an actual crack in it somewhere.
