Cheap hard drive?

What is the best place to buy a cheap hard drive?

Are there any brands which I should avoid? I want a cheap hard drive, but I don't want a bad hard drive!

To find the best deal on a hard drive, I would go to these three web sites:
I've had troubles with every hard drive manufacturer in existence. Hard drives are mechanical devices and they will fail. It's not a question of if, it's a question of when.

Some people will tell you to avoid Brand X or Brand Y because they had a series of bad experiences with them. I've had bad experiences with all of them.

You should be able to find an older (i.e. smaller) hard drive pretty cheap. This is especially true right now, as parallel ATA drives are being replaced with Serial ATA drives.

Personally, I would not recommend buying a used hard drive. There is no way to tell how much violence it has been subjected to.

And, of course, no matter what kind of storage you buy -- always maintain a current backup. All mechanical devices will fail.

Good advice from Will on this one, especially about not buying a hard drive second hand. The price of storage is so low these days that a limited budget isn't really an excuse to scour sites such as eBay.

Although I don't want to bias you, I've had particular problems with Maxtor in the past. I've had problems with Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung... but few more so than Maxtor. I would not say they are bad drives, but they have reported them to being more prone to failure than other manufacturers.

Look for reviews, get a good price and go ahead and buy it. There isn't a great deal of difference between smaller, budget end drives, so as long as it is from a reputable manufacturer you shouldn't have a problem.
