I have had such painfully horrible experiences with Sony DVD burners that I will never buy one again. My current NEC is awesome.

Master and Slave are ATA concepts.

Basically, if you have two drives on one ATA drive interface, one drive will be the master and the other drive will be the slave.

Some ATA drives use jumpers to set their status to Master, Slave, or Single Drive. Later ATA drives used a twist in the drive cable to determine which drive was Master and which was Slave.

How many ATA connections do you have on your motherboard? Most modern motherboards have two ATA controllers (to support four total ATA drives). How many ATA drives do you have in your system now? You may be able to put your new DVD burner on a controller all by itself.

What is the model of your hard drive? Does it have the jumper settings printed on the top of the drive?

All connectors should be together on the back of the drive.
