Question Hard Drives in USB caddies issue

I have been using hard drives in USB caddies for awhile, but I am also killing the drives in the process. I must not be parking the heads right when I unplub the USB from the computer. In XP, will the "safe removal" do this for me? I also have 2000 machines as well. How do I remove USB attached drives with out damaging them under 2000?

thanks

All modern hard drives move the drive heads using voice coil technologies. One of the many benefits of this over the older stepper motor technology is that voice coil hard drives all have naturally auto-parking heads.

Safe Removal will complete all pending writes to the device. This may be related to your issue. Are you seeing data corruption or physical device damage?

One thing that confuses me is that Windows 2000 does have Safe Remove. There is a patch that adds Safe Remove to Win98, but Safe Rremove should be standard in Windows 2000.

Unfortunately, I can't test this. I haven't had a running Windows 2000 system in quite a few years.

Hi,

According to the following site, safe removal should be inbuilt in win2000.

Check page 9:
