How big is too big? (monitors)

Is a 21" inch monitor too large for the human eye?
We need to run extreme resolutions on this monitor and I am not a big fan.

Is 17" the perfect size, or maybe 19"?

24"

What resolution do you run.
And more importantly, do you wear magnifiying lenses for spectacles?

It's an old Sony GDM-FW900 with an equally old NVIDIA GeForce2 Ultra video card.

Two oldies, but goodies.

The video card only supports a maximum of 1920x1440.

Only?

I also have a Geforce 2 video card!
It still works so well, I can run most of the latest games and this is a 4 or 5 year old card!

It works for me.

I personally like the 17" flat panel I'm using. Just a personal preference.

Anything where you have to scan your eyes around is way too huge for a computer monitor. Since you're face is right up to the computer monitor, it doesn't have to be too big. I think a 17" is fine, especially for an LCD. I currently have a 19" monitor, and even I think it's a little big for me to handle. I sort of like the smooth, slick, compact screen of a 17" LCD monitor. A 17" monitor with 1024x768 is perfect for me.

I do love the 24" CRT, but I spend 90% of my computing time in front of the 15.4" laptop display.

For most applications, I find myself sort of "staring through the monitor". I don't even notice the monitor is there.

But for gaming... it's back to the big screen!

Why don't you increase the resolution to at least 1024x768? It's kind of a waste of a monitor your size.

Size of your monitor depends on what you want to use it for. A large monitor with high res is a must for graphics editing or gaming. But if you are a casual browser, 17" is probably minimum for a comfortable desktop size. Just depends on personal preference, how much space you have, and how much money you have to spend.

A nice monitor that is 19", bright, fast and good resolution is the perfect monitor, in my opinion.

No way you can use a 21" monitor with 800x600!
That would make the text etc absolutely huge!
You may as well just have a 15" monitor...

When people clear across the room are able to read whatever is on your screen, then it's too big! Maybe it's just me, but I don't like anybody being in my business. 8)

Me either.
But not just that, 21" monitors are not made for that large resolution, unless of course he has visual problems, in which case it is acceptable

This is my set up of choice as well.
I think this is the most common choice for monitors, and 1024x768 is by far the most common resolution used by people.

I don't think any size is too big for the human eye. Components that require more reading just get made bigger. Sometimes people will bump up their defualt DPI, for example, on larger monitors so text is larger.

I only have a 19" monitor right now, but am looking at one of the 24" dells.

Really depends on what you are doing as well, but anything below 17" is probably too small at this point. Resolutions are moving up. Lots of websites are still being made to work on 800x600 but I don't see that lasting forever. I see the next base level being 1024x768.

And of course we all should really run 1900x1200.

I say 21" is too big because you actually have to move your head to read from one side of the monitor to the other :P
Thats the only reason, however if you dont mind doing this then its fine to have a big monitor.

I read somewhere that if you are a hard-core gamer, such a large screen actually hinders you because you have to scan across the monitor, which takes more time.

If that is the case, you might be sitting too close to the screen.

24" is gargantuan. That wouldn't even fit on my desk. I'm happy with a 19", anything bigger seems unnecessary.

Haha, that's a good point. If you're sitting back far enough - everything fits into your eyesight. I actually moved my monitor instead of having it on my desk right in my face.

How far back do you sit?

I have a good distance between myself and the monitor. I don't want to be getting square eyes.

Monitor

Well, I kind of prefer just the 17". Anything smaller is too small, and anything bigger just hurts my eyes. You're so close to the monitor that a bigger screen just is too big. However, this is just a personal preference. I have turned the contrast all the way down also. I really wish I could use a bigger screen, as hubby does, but for my eyes, it's only the 17".

I have actually started using a 19" screen for the past 2 weeks, and I am impressed.
You do get used to it after some time, and now when I go back to a 17", I find it rather small!

I dont think I would want larger than 19", but that size is perfect especially for games

if you can't see the entire screen easily, and don't back up, it's too big.
