Nice article, however this is no easy feat!
This is why companies make a fortune recovering data.. the good software costs thousands.

Software is only a small cost. Decent data recovery software has become reasonably inexpensive or, in many cases, free.

The costs really go up when the recovery needs move into hardware. If you have to take the platters out of a drive and move then to a working drive -- you have to purchase, inventory, and store one of every type of hard drive ever sold. That becomes expensive over time.

From there, you have to consider the salaries of experienced data recovery technicians. Those guys don't come cheap.

And then you get into the serious weirdness... NSA-type data recovery fun trying to recover data that has already been overwritten by reading only the edges of each bit. That stuff is spooky.

Yes they can, which is why low-security government standards define how many times something must be written over and high-security government standards specify that the drive platters must be physically destroyed.

Read Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory for an explanation of the technology.

I would start with the FAQ answer on free data recovery software.

$79 -- not too bad if you were attached to any of your data!

Just the thread that I was looking for. The FAQ section definitely provided some awesome tools and data recovery software. I have an old Dell Latitude notebook, been in storage for years. The hard drive on it appears to be fired, but there is still some content which I hope the retrieve. Let's see if I can recovery some it. Thanks!

Hi
I thought the article was very informative indeed! Yes it is great to know what to do in the event of the hard drive burning but it is also good to know what causes it to crash, which a lot of folk don't tell you about. Good for preventing things like this happening in the future. Well as far as possible anyway!
Just the kind of article I could have done with a few years ago when I first started getting all serious.
