How was the data lost?

Was it erased, or was the drive damaged?

If the drive was damaged, was it software damage or hardware damage?

If it was hardware damage, was it the drive electronics or the drive mechanics?

If it was the drive mechanics, was it the drive platters or the drive heads?

And... most importantly...

Do you have a backup?

Its difficult to do it yourself.
There are specialist companies who will charge you to recover lost HDD data.

Just search for "data recovery" on google and you should be able to find someone in your local area.
Expect to pay for it though.

Nice FAQ's there, I was going to write up a short spiel myself but you seem to cover everything there.

It's a tough topic, and something that you really shouldn't try yourself unless you know what you are doing.

There is a program you can use to recover deleted files on your computer called SmartUndelete. You can download it here for free:

Good luck!

Those sorts of programs will recover stuff you have deleted in the recycle bin.
it wont however recover files lost in a hard disk crash.

You can try to get some free recovery software, try searching for it. Not sure if I would recommend any paid recovery services though,

EASEUS DataRecoveryWizard has "Deleted Recovery", "Formatted Recovery", "Advanced Recovery", three functions recover lost data. You can try demo first.
