Problem - Laptop USB port uploading to an IPod

Hi Folks, my daughter has a Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop running Windows XP, she has recently had a problem where the IPod she has won't completely update itself.
It downloads about the first 300 tracks and then a message "Attempting to copy to the disk 'The revernen' failed. An unknown error (-69)" comes up.
The Reveren is the name of the IPod (don't ask me why!).

She has tried deleting the track it gets stuck on and it downloads a few more but then the same error message comes up.

She has also tried resetting the Ipod, installing the latest itunes, taking
it back to factory settings, using a different itunes cable, trying every
USB port and various other little tweaks that it suggests on the iunes
support.
The thing that makes me think its a port problem with the laptop is that when she resets the IPod and plugs it into another friend's laptop it downloads all of their tracks onto the Ipod fine. Likewise when she was at home before going back to Uni it updated fine off our home PC.

Any ideas, I'm trying to fix this remotely as she is away at Uni.

I'm afraid I've yet to purchase an IPOD. I know... I know... I'm behind the times!

I'm sure another member will know the answer!

PhilMose,

Have you tried a different PC ?? Or a different "internet connection ? It sounds like to me that the I-Pod site you are attempting this is too busy. You might want to try the D/L at some other time, like "late night".

Thanks perhaps my wording wasn't very good. The problem is when she is trying to update the Ipod with the tracks that are on her Itunes on the laptop. In effect when she is trying to transfer tracks from the laptop onto the Ipod. She hasn't got a problem downloading from the internet, sorry shouldn't have used the term download.

Just an add on she also states that when the Ipod is updating it appears in 'my Computer' as the E drive. When the error message comes up it disappears from 'My computer'.

what OS does she have on the laptop?

Have you tried resetting the device by holding the center button and the menu button till you see the apple sign?

As per my first post windows XP home, and she has tried resetting the Ipod. As I said it seems to tranfer tracks from any other computer which makes me think it's a problem on the laptop?

Have you the latest version of everything (iTunes, etc)? Have you tried updating drivers that could be related to the issue? Have you looked in the device manager for issues? Does the iPod work on any other computer?

In answer to you questions in order. Yes latest itunes, not sure on drivers or device manager as I explained I'm trying to do this remotely, and yes it does work on other computers, again as I stated previously.

So if it works on other computers then that leaves only the laptop to blame. I would check devices and drivers, if all else fails...a reformatting may be in store. I hate to say that because it involves a fair bit of work, but sometimes that is the best cure.

Lastly, are the laptop specs up to par with the hardware and software being used? Maybe the system requirements are not up to par???

noooo.. don't format yet

you can view your system logs Phil, this may give a better idea on the exact error.
To get to them go to your My Computer icon and right click > manage >

This opens up your computer management screen.
now try System Tools > Event Viewer > Application

do you have remote access to the laptop ?

Talking

Success! I was given a tip to try at the following link,

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302684

The problem is apparently caused by 'rogue' tracks on the ITunes library (on the laptop) that the Ipod can't sync with. Using the above help she managed to identify and remove 4 tracks that were causing all the problems. It now works a treat. I thought I'd post the link in case anyone else ever had the same problem.

Thanks for your suggestions and bothering to reply to my post.
