Rep Power: 4 | Network Card Whenever I load my computer, it freezes on a screen for about 20 mins. I should not be taking a computer that long to load! I receive a message that states "TFTP is open". A computer repair person told me that I should go onto my network card and close that. Does anyone have any clue as to what I should do? |

Rep Power: 6 | TFTP - Trivial File Transfer Protocol is a protocol which is commonly used to send files in an automated way -- and is frequently used for remote booting of diskless workstations.
Why it would show up in this context -- I have no idea. I am very confused by this! |

Rep Power: 4 | The computer is running Windows XP. Before I had the problem, I hadn't heard of TFTP either. You can imagine what I was thinking whenever the repair lady asked me to do something to the "TFTP" thing.
The network seems like it would be part of the internet connection. I'm not sure as to why there's a problem when i'm logging on. Then again, whenever I load my computer without the modem plugged up then I don't have that problem. But, I can't use my modem unless it is plugged up during start up. |

Rep Power: 4 | I have never even heard of this protocol, which is weird for me because I am quite familiar with these things.
Is it something that is used with windows by default or is it an added extra? |

Rep Power: 6 | TFTP is definitely not a normal part of Windows.
TFTP is very common with diskless workstations. It just doesn't seem to belong here.
Can you give us the exact error message, along with the messages before and after it so that we can see where it fits in the boot cycle? |

Rep Power: 6 | Ahhh... PXE.
PXE (Pre-Boot Execution Environment) enables a PC to boot from a boot server across the network.
Go into your PC's BIOS and check the boot options. Turn off anything that looks like "boot from the network". Tell your PC to boot from its own hard drive. |

Rep Power: 4 | Thank you! I think I understand how my PC ended up like this. The repair person changed the boot setup to "Boot from CD-ROM" in order to re-install windows. She must have screwed up the start up order. Can I access the BIOS setup from windows? |

Rep Power: 6 | Power-off your computer and power it on again.
As the power comes on and it starts to boot up, it will tell you what key to press enter your BIOS setup.
The <DELETE> key is the most common. |

Rep Power: 4 | I tried it this morning. However, that menu is password protected. I know for a fact that I didn't set up a password for that and I'm the only one that uses my pc. Is there anyway to turn that password prompt off? |

Rep Power: 4 | OK, first, is your computer networked to another?
If it isn't then you should have no problem removing the network card. If the repair man said that is the problem, then remove the problem |

Rep Power: 4 | I don't know where the network card is, nor do I know how to access it.
The repair person didn't leave detailed instructions. Anyway, I'm going to read the directions on how to reset the BIOS password and I should be good to go from there. |

Rep Power: 4 | Take it back to the person who "repaired" it and ask them to fix it. Tell them they left the system in a state which is not properly operating. On top of that they locked your BIOS.
They need to get your system working properly again, and it should be at no additional cost. |

Rep Power: 4 | If you can't find the network card, resetting the BIOS wont fix it.
Do you mean you can't physically find the network port, or the computer won't see the card? |

What she asked me to do is very different than things that are listed here. Also, I had already told her that I didn't know how to "close" the TFTP thing and she just said "hmmmm". So, I'm lost. |

Rep Power: 6 | I do not see what any of this has to do with the network card.
The problem is that the computer is attempting to boot from the network.
There is no network boot server in this environment. This makes it impossible for the computer to boot from the network no matter what the state of the network card is.
The computer should be reconfigured to boot first from the local hard drive, not from the network.
This requires changing the BIOS settings. That is the task at hand.
What is the make and model of the computer? What is the make of the BIOS? AMI? Award? Phoenix? |

Rep Power: 4 | I don't know what it has to do with the network card either, I just know that I was told to do something to the network card. Your guess is as good as mine.
How do I find out the make of the BIOS and make and all of that? Does it pop up on the screen when I first load my pc? |

Rep Power: 4 | I figured out the password. Now, what do I need to do? My harddrive is already set to boot from hard drive. So, i'm not sure why it's trying to load from the network. |

Rep Power: 4 | In BIOS there should be an option to set the Boot Order - make sure your hard drive is set as #1, and CD drives and floppy drives take up the other spots.
I dont see a reason for network to be in that boot list at all. |

Rep Power: 4 | It is now set to boot from Hard drive first, and Cd Rom second. Nothing is set to "boot from network". I still have not been able to find anything that says Network in the Bios menus at all, and I'm still having the same problem. By the way, I have "Award" Bios. |

Read through his previous post, apart from that though I cannot suggest anything.
Are you actually on a network at all? |
