Rep Power: 3 | Shopping for a notebook computer with DVDRW Take a look http://www.pricewatch.com/prc.aspx?i=336&a=264462
The first product "Gateway 2000" mentions XGA w/CDRW+DVD Combo.
My doubt is if this DVD Combo means a DVD writer too?? or just a CD writer and a DVD ROM? |

Rep Power: 5 | CDRW+DVD usually means that the drive can burn CD's, but not DVD's.
When the drive can burn DVD's, they normally say "DVDRW". |

Rep Power: 3 | Ok thanks Will,
Are there any laptops with DVDRW for some lesser prices? And please mention some company like IBM or ASUS which produces decent laptops for a bit lesser prices. |

Rep Power: 5 | IBM is the most expensive option.
I dunno who is good on the low-end anymore, all my laptops for the last decade have been business expenses. |

Almost any major notebook manufacturer will have a DVD option

Rep Power: 5 | I'm typing on a Dell Latitude D800 right now.
Dell's have become quite expensive!
My company standardized on Dell laptops because we can get good global support and we do a lot of national and international travel.
What do you guys think of AlienWare machines? |

Rep Power: 3 | If you want some great specs for your buck, then you should take a look at the Acer Travelmate 4064WLMI. It has an Intel Pentium M 2.0GHz processor, 1GB Ram, 100GB HDD, DVD Burner, Wifi... pretty much anything you can think of, and it's only $2,000 AUD. Not sure if it can be purchased in the US, however if it can, its an excellent purchase. We have one in store here (I own and run a small computer store) and it's a fantastic notebook for the price.

Rep Power: 3 | Check out Fatwallet Forums at the following: http://www.fatwallet.com/c/18/
You can type in "laptop" in the search query and you'll get some good results. The deals are usually after rebates and coupons, though. Sometimes rebates can be very annoying. |

Rep Power: 5 | I always get Dell's for my family members, because then they call Dell when the PC's break instead of calling me. |

Rep Power: 3 | We've had so many Dell notebooks come in lately for repair with dead mainboards being the primary problems - we've had at least 12 in the last 4 weeks. Dell have been notorious for their motherboard problems lately, and getting them repaired or replaced can end up costing small fortune (some have been +$1000 for the replacement board). We most definately recomend you not buy a Dell, and look for a more reputable brand such as HP/Compaq, Acer, Toshiba or NEC. (Even the Sony Viao's and/or LG if you can afford them)

Rep Power: 5 | This does match my experience with Dell notebooks.
You must stay on the support plan for replacement parts. |

Rep Power: 3 | Dell often has some great specials on; however I have heard some bad stories about support/warranties.
I have an old IBM laptop that I got from an auction. It's only a P3 but it only cost me $250 and does everything I need it to. |

Rep Power: 5 | Dell is really excellent with support and warranties.
Those old IBM laptops were absolute beasts -- they were almost indestructable. The last two I had were an A20P and an A21P. They were great machines, but IBM sold the whole bloody PC division to the Communist Chinese. |

Rep Power: 5 | Tech support calls from family are the worst.
I remember my sister calling me because her mouse was dirty -- as if I could clean it over the telephone. |

Rep Power: 3 | Hrm, I hadn't heard that about Dell. Would really suck to buy one and then have to replace it. Guess I'll be looking into some other options. |

Rep Power: 3 | Do you have a Fry's by you? They run specials from time-to-time on pretty well-equipped notebooks. I saw one recently that had what you were looking for, so if there is one in your area check their newspaper circular, should have come out today.
Also I think AMEX has a Christmas Special on a laptop. I was talking it over with a friend, and it was an excellent deal on a very well equipped thinkpad. |

Rep Power: 0 | I just purchased a laptop with a DVDRW drive as a Christmas present to my extremely picky computer programmer husband. It was delivered yesterday and he's extremely happy with the choice I made. I ordered mine from Best Buy for $1,099 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1125465158162 |

Rep Power: 3 | HP make decent notebooks, they have some good budget ones out at the moment.
I still prefer Dell but HP are good for a low budget.
