Can anybody help?

A friend of mine has gone to live out in Turkey for a while. They use VoIP and when they call me the number that comes up normally begins with 0844. But the last time they called, the number that came up began with 01273 (a Brighton, East Sussex number). Unfortunately, I have lost the rest of the number and cannot get in touch with them. Could you please tell me if they would be back in the country (at the time of that call) or if VoIP can be sent via a normal landline number from Turkey (so that a Brighton number would show up on my phone display even though they are not in this country) aswell as a DID (free local-rate phone number).

I would appreciate your help as I am desperate to get in touch with them!

The options for how they could appear to be in Britain even if they are not in Britain are almost limitless.

Call British Telecom. Ask them for your Call Detail Records (CDR). If they give them to you, you will be able to see the numbers that called you.

I don't mean to sound stupid here because I'm pretty familiar with computers, but how does VoIP work and what is the benefit? I may just have to use this someday soon. Thanks!

VOIP stands for Voice Over IP, which is just that
Voice over the Internet Protocol.

So basically its a cheap/free way of talking to people online!
