The TiVo still seems to hold the "best DVR" title.
But... is cost a consideration? If cost is a consideration, then you may be able to get a much better deal from your cable or satellite TV service provider.
Almost all satellite and cable TV companies rent DVR's to their subscribers at rates lower than standard TiVo service.
The best of both worlds is DirecTV, which rents their subscribers actual TiVo DVR's.
I actually don't have TiVo in my area, and it isn't available. We wound up getting our DVR through our cable company at a better rate than we would have if we got it elsewhere. It works great and I love it! If TiVo is in your area, many people I know swear by it. Sorry I don't have a recommendation for anything else.

TiVo Service is now available in Canada. TiVo does not sell boxes in Canada, so Canadian residents must purchase boxes in the US and import them. If the DVR becomes defective, TiVo will not ship a warranty replacement box into Canada, and will only ship to a US address.

I too swear by my DVR! I love it. however I wish I could get even more on it. I have mine through my cable service and it is a monthly fee. I don't know what we did without it. I still have my VCR and watch programs from on it but it is not the same. When my DVR gets full and I don't want to erase those programs on it I will have to record them onto my VCR. But I would advise anyone who is getting cable or satelitte to definitely get the DVR service it is well worth it.
