Most ISP's use DHCP.
DHCP matches IP address and MAC addresses.
If you power cycle your network device (DSL modem, cable modem, etc...), you may get a new IP address. Or, the DHCP server may remember your MAC address and give you the same IP address.
There are wide differences in the DHCP lease times used by various ISP's. If you leave your network device off for longer than the DHCP lease time, you may get a new IP address. Or, the DHCP server may remember your MAC address and give you the same IP address.
If you find a way to change the MAC addresses of your network device, you are almost certain to get a new IP address. Quote: |

Rep Power: 3 | I think ipconfig /release will only renew an IP address if you are on dial up.. most cable/DSL companies wont let you do that though. |

Rep Power: 6 | `ipconfig` affects the IP address on your local computer.
With cable, DSL, and satellite broadband connections, you need to change the IP address on your cable/DSL/satellite router.
That's a wee bit more difficult, but most of those devices do have some sort of user interface -- usually web based. |

Rep Power: 3 | Is it even possible through the router software?
I think you need to change your router mac address to change the IP |

Rep Power: 3 | You could just use a proxy ... the chat room server won't know your own IP, just the proxy server's. |

Rep Power: 6 | Most hardware devices store their firmware on EEPROM's (Electronically Eraseable Read Only Memory).
Pry that EEPROM chip out of a device and put in it an EEPROM reader and you can read all of the data and code that is stored on the chip.
Then, you can modify the data, write it back to the chip, and place the chip mack in the machine.
You can modify all sorts of electronic devices this way. It's uber-geeky. |

Rep Power: 3 | Wouldnt someone have to be really desperate to pay for a proxy?
Like a little desperate to hide their identity.. Im not sure if its a good idea to do that! |

Rep Power: 3 | Lol, the only reason I really use a proxy is to get around Websense at my school so I can read something besides the news . Websense is very good at finding proxy sites though, so it gets really annoying.
If you are using a proxy for just browsing, they shouldn't be slow enough that you have a problem with them. Or maybe I've developed some patience because I had dial-up in January . |

Rep Power: 3 | dunno if someone said this before but isn't changing ips illegal? I know that ip spoofing is so I think it should be about the same. I have a program that is able to change the mac address called IPTools. I don't use it though |

Rep Power: 3 | well , a long time ago , when i engaged myself in irc flooding , inviting and other bad works , I used proxy. I dont know why irc servers can't most of the time fail to get my real ip , whether with the same proxy , all web sites can trace my real ip !
I wonder , if its possible in web sites , why its not implemented in irc servers !! |

Rep Power: 6 | There are two possible technical explanations that I can think of. Insecure Clients
Your web client (browser) is telling the remote server what your IP address is, which your IRC client is being more discreet. Insecure Protocols
The HTTP protocol embeds the source IP into the outbound packets, while the IRC protocol does not.
My guess is that it's a client issue, because I don't think that the HTTP protocol does that. The answer to that question would be in the HTTP RFC's. |
