Rep Power: 5 | Click the <Start> button.
Click <Run>.
Type in "cmd" and press <RETURN>.
In the command shell which opens, type in "netsh interface ip delete arpcache" and press <RETURN>.
Your results should look like this: Code: C:\>netsh interface ip delete arpcache
Ok. |

We need to put Windows back into its place.
To workaround this bug in Microsoft Windows:
Click the <Start> button
Click the <Control Panel> button
Switch to "Classic View" if you are in "Category View"
Click <Administrative Tools>
Click <Computer Management>
Double-click <Services and Applications>
Double-click <Services>
Scroll down to <Routing and Remote Services>
Double-click <Routing and Remote Services>
Examine the "Startup Type"
The options are "Automatic", "Manual", and "Disabled"
Set the "Startup Type" to "Disabled"
Click the <OK> button
Now try to clear your arp cache. It should work this time with no error messages. |

Also, sometimes it is useful to clear the ARP cache if you change a device you are directly connected to on a network. For example, let's say that your PC is connected to a router network router with an IP address of 192.168.1.1 and a MAC address of 00:60:70:A1:B2:C3. One day, you replace that router with a new router. The new router has a MAC address of 00:60:B0:A1:B2:C3, but you configure it with the same IP address as the old router. Your ARP cache still remembers the old mapping. You have two choices -- you can wait that entry in your ARP cache to timeout, or you can manually clear the ARP cache and get back to work immediately. |

Rep Power: 0 | perhaps you could also help me. i recently moved into a new apartment and set up a new network using a new netgear router. i'm a big newbie when it comes to networks, but i know how to set them up and what not. the network works fine for one laptop, but with another, it is only able to connect to the network but not access the internet. It can't open web pages either wirelessly or wired. whenever i try to repair the internet connection, XP tells me that the ARP cache can't be cleared. i've cleared it through the command prompt, but then when i try to fix the connection in XP, it still tells me the cache can't be cleared. i'm not even sure if this will help restore surfing capability, but it's a start. thanks for any help. |

To work around this Microsoft Windows bug, just disable Routing and Remote Services: - Click the <Start> button
- Click the <Control Panel> button
- Switch to "Classic View" if you are in "Category View"
- Click <Administrative Tools>
- Click <Computer Management>
- Double-click <Services and Applications>
- Double-click <Services>
- Scroll down to <Routing and Remote Services>
- Double-click <Routing and Remote Services>
- Examine the "Startup Type"
- The options are "Automatic", "Manual", and "Disabled"
- Set the "Startup Type" to "Disabled"
- Click the <OK> button
Next, clear your arp cache again. It should work this time without any error messages. |

Rep Power: 5 | You will have to enable TCP/IP for that connection.
There are a number of ways to do this. Here is roughly how I would proceed: - <Start>
- <Control Panel>
- <Network Connections>
- Double-click on the connection you wish to edit
- <Install>
- Highlight Protocol
- Click <Add>
- Highlight Microsoft
- Highlight Internet Procotol (TCP/IP)
- Click <OK>

Rep Power: 0 | Will! You are quite the guy.
I have read through this thread a couple of times and though I started with the same problem as the others mine veers away after the "netsh..." from the command line. I do get an Ok but when I go back to repair I get the same message "...unable to clear arp cache." I have checked the Routing and Remote Access service. It was disabled before I got there.
I am working behind a router and I did get an "... same/duplicate IP..." conflict today. I have since restarted both machines.
Any other ideas?
Thanks a million!

Rep Power: 0 | Scrap that! I checked the services on the computer I was on and not the services of the computer I was having problems with...
This happens when you have three boxes running at your desk and you are so numb from surfing, kvm switching and testing, ... surfing, kvm switching and testing,...surfing, kvm switching and testing.
Thanks for your time!

If you still can't clear the ARP cache, the next step would be to delete and rediscover that Interface. |

Rep Power: 5 | You should leave Routing and Remote Services disabled unless you are using your Windows PC as a network router.
We've seen a few instances where the "usual fix" of turning off Routing and Remote Services did not fix this ARP cache bug in Microsoft Windows.
In those cases, we recommend deleting the network interface and rebooting to have the network interface automatically rediscovered.
It appears that there might by another bug in Microsoft Windows which has the same symptoms as the older bug. |
