Exclamation internet connection sharing issues

first off i have two computers side by side in a room both have xp sp2, one computer (this one) connects directly to the internet via a dsl line, and the printer is also connected to this one. the 2 computers are conected with a basic hub i bought from wallmart, it is a linksys 5 prt network hub model nh1005. the host computer has a built in network adapter and the other has 1 nic as well as a built in adapter, right now the cable is connected to the nic.
last week we started having problems with the printer not working from the second computer and then it could no longer connect to the internet or access any of the shared files on the host computer but!! for some reason it could connect to aim. the host computer was fine though it could still print, connect to the internet, and access the shared files on the other computer. when trying to repair the conetion on the second computer i would keep getting "clearing the arp cache blah blah" message i tried to clear it manually via the "netsh interface ip delete arpcache" cmd but it diddnt help. so today i decided to browse the web again in hopes of an anwser when i stumbled apon this place and this post http://www.tech-faq.com/forum/compte...rnet-1208.html. i did what was listed and it diddnt work at first so i went back in and stopped it from running the service (this is all on the seconed computer btw) and now it worked i was able to repair the connection. now the second computer can acess the shared files on the host computer and use the printer but still cant browse web sites, aim is the only thing that works still. ive run the network wizard countless times on both computers and still cant get the internet to work on the seconed computer.

and on a side note my dsl connection isnt the best its a 3.0mbps service (best available) but for some reason when i look at the status of the connection it says im connected at 12.0mbps, but every speed test i do says 3.0 (give or take) and i know its not that fast i had a 10.0mbps connection where i used to live and this is no where near as fast as that. just throwing that out there im not sure if that has anyhting to do with it.

any help i can get would be insanely appreciated this has been driving me nuts.

****edit*** ive also tried shutting down all antivirus software and firewalls on both computer and it hasent helped****

I would first make certain that Routing and Remote Services really is disabled and stopped on both machines.

However, there may be a new bug in Windows, as we're seeing people for whom that is not working to alleviate this ARP cache problem.

After that, I would delete the network interfaces from both computers and reboot both computers to let the network interfaces be rediscovered.

This is your computer displaying the connection rate to the LinkSys hub.

That is, thankfully, nothing to worry about.

routing and remote services are disabled and stopped on both machines, i unistallled the network interfaces on both computers and rebooted both, i have new numbers on the network connections (ie: lan 5 as opposed to lan) but i still cant browse the internet from the other computer.

update

well i tried a few new things.
i hooked the dsl directly to the second computer and installed the software provided by the isp and it could connect to the internet fine, so i unhooke dit and hooked back to the host and tried again and the seconed computer still could not suref over the shared connection so i hooked the dsl to the second computer again and reversed the network and made that the host computer and what do you know? when its set up that way everything works correctly. the left the two computers set up like that for now but i would still like the internet hooked directly to this computer since is the one used the most and i play everquest on it. before i thought it had to be an issue with the second computer now i have no idea waht to think.

That is really odd, but I am glad to hear that it is working -- even if it isn't working quite the way you want it to.

It just occurred to me that I was thinking about your issue incorrectly. I was thinking of both of your PC's plugged into a layer 3 device, which was then connected to your DSL modem.

If both of your PC's are plugged into a hub, and that hub is plugged into the DSL modem, why are you using Intenet Connection Sharing? Why can't both PC's talk directly through the hub to the DSL modem? <thinking>

the way it was hooked up before i had the dsl connected to one computer then both computers hooked to the hub. now on your advice i hooked the dsl directly to the hub (in the uplink port) and set up the network accordingly and now everything works. is this a better connection then i had before in terms of internet speeds to both computers?

Yes. Definitely. This lets the network devices do network device tasks and lets the PC's focus on PC tasks.

This is very good and should work in a much more worry-free manner.

This is a happy note for my Friday morning.
