Nope. Those stealth ports are incoming ports, your problem (I think...) is with outgoing ports.

Why is it that Messenger only connects when I specify IP Address and Subnet Mask only and fails when I add the Default Gateway and Preferred DNS Server?
I am about to give up, maybe another re-installation can help.

The IP Address portion of that description screams "DNS issue", which may also match the Preferred DNS server portion of the description.

But that doesn't explaim the subnet mask behavior or the default gateway behavior.

Something very weird is going on. If each network setting on the "bad" machine matches the corresponding network setting on the "good" machine, then there is something unknown which is causing this trouble.

With the unknown, you can sometimes return to a "known state" by starting from scratch. This is usually faster than troubleshooting.
