If you are looking for a serviceable notebook for your business traveling needs, the HP Compaq 2510p may be just the thing for you. Although this piece of hardware won’t win you any flashy points on the “oh gosh” meter as compared to the extremely thin Toshiba Portege R500, and the even thinner Sony VAIO TZ150. However, there is a sufficient number of zeros on the price tag that may impress those who ask. Basic gear starts at a cool $1,499 but you can have it re-fitted to your specifications.
The HP Compaq 2510p is geared specifically for the suit and tie crowd. It is very professional looking, but still stylish enough to garner some interested second-looks. For the techie fanatic, this ultraportable may be considered a bit on the bulky side, and it weighs about 2.9 lbs. – still relatively heavier than most other notebooks.
On the other hand, this box-like construction has a more durable build. Its hardware can withstand the constant wear and tear of traveling. In fact, it feels more solid than the other notebook, so you won’t feel as if the machine will break apart in your hands while you handle it. Its integrated optical drive can: read, write (on) and rewrite (on) CDs and DVDs. Although not noted to have the most excellent span for battery life, the HP Compaq 2510p’s battery still delivers.
For the paranoid ultraportable user, this machine also boasts of better embedded security measures: with the Trusted Platform Module or TPM 1.2 Security Chip and built-in fingerprint reader. There is also HP Disk Sanitizer, memory change alert, power-on password access, security lock slot, and system password.
This machine also has a great set of keyboard, solid in backing with nice touch-response. Despite its rather miniature system size, users of the HP Compaq 2510p may find typing and encoding far easier than its predecessor, the Compaq nc2400.
There are certain drawbacks. For one thing, the speaker system isn’t as good as the other notebooks; which should be great if you aren’t into watching videos or Internet conferencing while you travel, but an awful nightmare if you are doing presentations using sounds. And there are also times when the hard drive (60 GB – 4,200 rpm) is reacting rather slowly to multi-tasking commands. One last thing: pointing sticks are used as opposed to the mouse clicking which can be a bit irritating at the beginning.
But otherwise, this is a fine machine with a built-in Wireless LAN antenna; an Intel Core 2 Duo U7500 / 1.06 GHz processor; a 1GB to 2GB RAM; a 12.1 inch LCD display with a 1,280 x 800 resolution, anti glare and anti ambient light sensors; and a 4.0 version of the Dynamic Video Memory Technology; touchpad; fax and modem; etc.
