Question IBM 600E disk/bios access problem

hello

got this old laptop IBM 600E model 2645-4A0.
anyhow I noticed that the disk was broken and found a used disk.
inserted the disk into slot. booted machine and there exists this icon,
picture of 'disk, number 1 and lock'.

cant figure the password as I assume this is what it asks.
can't reboot from CD either.
is this passable without knowing the password?!

feel like helpless...

then i noticed as i put the old disk in the slot and reboot the machine,
it don't ask this password.

Is this password thing disk dependable issue as is it depends on the disk?

I was thinking of buying a new disk for this laptop but had secondthoughts on this as wondering can I even access that new one..??

Anyone having hints or advice.

The IBM 600 can have three types of passwords:
  • Power On Password
  • Supervisor Password
  • Hard Disk Password
This looks like a hard disk password issue.

The Thinkpad 600X Hardware Maintenance Manual states:
Note: The supervisor password and hard disk password cannot be replaced if they are forgotten. If the customer forgets the supervisor password, the system board must be replaced. If the customer forgets the hard disk password, the hard disk drive must be replaced.
For more information, check the IBM 600 Technical Reference.

I would return that used hard drive which you bought and complain to the seller for providing you with a password-locked hard drive.
