Computer time

What would cause my computer to stop keeping the right time? I have to keep resetting it to GMT -6 hours (Central Time) every few months.

Thanks!

Does the time get screwed up, or just the timezone?

What time zone does it change itself to? Have you considered moving?

Actually, it just slows a couple minutes after a month or two. I noticed it when I set the computer to my cell phone which is set by a satellite... I think. Anyway, I noticed a couple months later that it was off again. I reset it ... and then a couple months later it was off yet again!

That's a fairly common problem.

The solution is to use NTP (Network Time Protocol).

In the Control Panel, go into "Date and Time" and then click the "Internet Time" tab.

Check "Automatically synchrinize with an Internet time server", pick a time server, click the "Update Now" button to test and then click the "OK" button to save your settings.

This may sound like a stupid question but what is GMT? I noticed this alot and get confused as to what to put when there is no reference to where it is. I am aware of central, mountian, etc. But what about this time, I know it will be a simple answer and probably one I already know just can't recall it. Don't laugh at me, I can be slow at times. Just bare with me when I ask some of these questions.

GMT is Greenwich Mean Time. GMT is the time in Greenwich England. This is used as a reference for time across the globe. For example, Colorado is GMT-7 (seven hours behind GMT) and California is GMT-8.
