My Vid card dead?

Every so often, when i am playing a game like quake, the screen kinda flickers and gets real dark. Then i have to do a "vid-restart" does that mean my vid card is dying?

Probably not. Most video problems are due to buggy software, both software and application software. The quality of both seems to be dropping year over year.

Hmmm. that makes me feel better to think that my vid card is doing ok. But not really sure how to look for a "bug" in my system.

There's not much that you can do, except to make sure that you are running the latest releases of the drivers for your video card.

If its just that game then its likely your computer cant handle it, or the refresh rate is mucking up.
What video card is it most importantly??

Its an ATI 9800. And the game i am running is only quake 3. My machine should be able to handle it with ease. In fact, my machine has handled it with ease for the past 2 years. However, this video glitch started a few months ago.

Its a CRT that is a few years old. But i really dont think it is the monitor. The promblem only occurs during quake. Perhaps i should install another graphics intesive game and see if i get the same trouble.

Then i will know if it is the vid card or a bug in the game.
