Partition Your Hard Drive

Partitioning your hard drive means dividing it up into two or more drives. The actual hardrive disk is called the physical drive and each partition is called a logical drive.

Dividing your hard drive into partitions improves performance and simplifies backups by the seperating operating system from things like documents, worksheets, images, etc. This is just one example of how you might divide your drive. It's really up to you.

There's software on the market to help you partiion your drive. Partition Commander ($50), Paragon Partition Manager ($50) are two of several you can choose from.

It is always good to partition your HDD when you format it in the first place. Never hurts to have a backup. I currently have 3 partitions in mine, XP, Linux (Fedora Core 3), and backup/experimental OS's.

WARNING!: Some data can be lost during a repartition. Save your important stuff on a cd or 2 .

If you have XP you can use divide up your drive through Windows XP Disk Management. It's a pain to do it through the DM but you will save $50.

From what I have heard and seen it is worth it. Lost info can't be brought back so put a price tag on your work and see if it is less than 80 bucks.
