Seagate Barracude 7200.10 -- 750 GB!

Seagate has recently released a 750GB version of it's Barracuda 7200 RPM hard drive.

The drives support Serial ATA and Native Command Queuing (NCQ).

Check out the Product Overview and the Product Datasheet.

I want two!

That is a huge amount of storage for the home user, though with the digital media age upon us I suppose plenty of film buffs and suchlike will benefit.

Currently they are retailing £275 on Dabs, though you could pick up a pair of 500GB drives for an extra £25 and have the additional storage or option of RAID.

Either way, I think I'm going to be trading in my three SATA drives and picking up a couple of 500GB drives as replacements seeing as though they are relatively cheap. Currently, my machine sounds like a fleet of 747's so I might benefit from new and fewer drives in that respect.

I'd also like to make use of the onboard RAID, far easier than backing up data manually, especially now I've accumulated so much media.

I could not sleep well at night without RAID mirroring.

My desktop currently has two 300 GB parallel ATA drives. Soon, it will probably have two of these new 500 GB SATA drives.

Yeah, I'm sure another 200GB of storage space wouldn't go amiss, particularly if you're keen on your films and music.

My set up is a little disjointed, as I run a 160GB SATA drive as my C: drive, where Windows, Applications and Games are isntalled. A 250GB SATA drive makes up my D: drive and holds music, films, web work, articles, and is basically a rather large "My Documents" folder.

The majority of my D: drive is backed up onto my 200GB SATA E: drive, which is my backup device. Unfortunately I purchased all three drives at separate times otherwise I may have done the sensible thing and purchased a pair of the same drive and run them in RAID. Is it possible to run a pair of RAID mirrored drives and have a third drive as I do now? I would like to mirror my D: drive in particular and continue with applications and operating systems on the other.

I'm planning on keeping all four drives online.

Definitely, as long as you have two similar drives to mirror. For example, I have two 300GB mirrorred drives and one (part-time) external 250GB drive. The external drive is USB2/FireWire. Some day soon it will be SATA.
