Troubleshooting Monitor Problems

Here are some tips for troubleshooting common monitor problems.

Text is Blurry

Adjust the Moire on your monitor.

Monitor Flickers

Check the refresh rate. A refresh rate of 60Hz is suscpetible to intereference from electrical power. Raise your refresh rate. 72Hz is recommended on most video devices.

Display Wavers and Moves

This is a result of power system interference. Check the power supply in your PC. Check interference from nearby users of the power grid, particularly power tools and heavy machinery. Contact an electrician to have your power checked.

Ghosting

Try reducing the contrast setting on your monitor.

Check your monitor cables. Be especially careful with video extender cables.

Incorrect Colors

Check your video cables and connectors for bent or broken pins and wires.

Sides of Picture are Not Straight

This most often occurs when you move a monitor. This is caused by the variable magnetic fields in the Earth.

Use the adjustment features of your monitor to straighten the sides of your picture.

Dark Spots on the Screen

This is often the result of local magnetic intereference. Move speakers and other devices containing magnets away from the monitor.

Use the monitors degaussing button, if it is equipped with one. If not, power cycle the monitor to active the automatic degaussing process.

Loud Hum

This sound is normal while the monitor is powering up. This sound is caused by the automatic degaussing process.

Plastic Smell

This is normal in a new monitor, although ventilation is recommended.

If this occurs in an older monitor, it may be a sign of impending failure.

Here is another one. Flickering due to refresh rate matching frequency of floresent lights. In an office situation where the monitor runs at a lower refresh rate, 60 khz, the pulsing of the floresent lights will give an illusion of monitor flicker. Strange but true!

Fix: Increase refresh rate.
