What is CAS Latency?

I read this term somewhere on a website in a hardware article. I have no idea what it is since i m from non computers background. Could someone tell me what CAS latency is ? where is it used?

I learned about this in computer magazines years ago, but I still never paid too much attention to it.

It's the kind of thing only real geeks care about when buying RAM

I believe they get into it due to the fact that it can affect game performance, which is about the only reason you need a high end expensive computer - to play intensive games
