Rep Power: 0 | ??Back Up PC?? OK...I think I have an idea of what this means and why, but how? That does not mean I have to make a cd hardcopy of everything in PC does it?
So, in moron terms, how do I backup my PC & how often? Is there different levels of backing up? Like maintenance vs b4 doing major upgrading on PC?
Thanks!

Rep Power: 6 | Here are some basic points on the subject. If anyone has more offer, please do!
1. Back up your computer files should be a routine event for everyone! This is to prevent the lose or damage of critical data! I'd suggest backing up your files at least once a week.
2. The types of files you'll want to back up are documents (Word, Excel, etc.), emails, templates, Favorites file... basically, anything you'll regret not having down the road!
3. You should back up your data before you making any changes to software or hardware. Either of these events can cause you to loose information/data
Here's a link to Microsoft with more detailed information on the backup process... http://www.microsoft.com/athome/more...ckupfiles.mspx

Rep Power: 3 | backin up i just put a second hard drive in my computer and coppy what ever i want to back up on it. i dont like backing everything up. some times when my computer crashes and i have to reformat , it is kind of a blessing since there is so much junk on it any ways. i only back up my MP3's,what i download, and important files. if i have it on disc. then ill just reinstall it from the disc. |

Rep Power: 0 | That all depends on you and how important stuff on your PC is.
I use ghost to do a full back up for entire PC once a month and then once a week I back up My Documents and my Outlook PST file.
It is all about how much time you have and how important your data is.

Rep Power: 0 | plot a strategy make a folder in the my documents section for things that go into the vault, and download and save others in draft areas that can be surgically deleted from time to time. Clean up your memory and prune old files and projects, or just archive them to a flash drive periodically.
I tend to delete things i know i can find in email, and vice versa.
But regarding the back up question, you can get the hard back up point updated on your pc, so when you do system restore there are multiple points available, not just 7 months ago, system purchase date, etc. etc.
lots of updates and such go into daily use running underneath, backing up to a really old point will mean undertaking glitch fixing again /now.
Take stock of what's on the desktop. Delete all financial inf and emails and archive or print out if necessary, then shred. Don't leave web admin installs or groups of users for people to rob the access to.
Have your security programs handy on disk, and blank media for backing up as well as the latest backup. Then a restore becomes a minor pain, instead of a major hassle. |

A very important step to take when you're trying to protect yourself from the outside world. I recommend using a criss cross shredder (turns stuff into confetti) and not one of those that just makes pretty strips of paper!

Rep Power: 6 | Hey Cuddlebug,
Welcome!
A full drive can slow things down if you have several applications open at once. It depends on how much you have open and how much memory you have available.
Here is a good tutorial on how to back up your system with Windows... Windows XP Backup Made Easy
Just follow the instructions and you should do fine!
Lyte EDIT: Here's the link from above too about backing up your files... Back up your computer files
