Ghost Drivers... gumming up the works!

It may surprise you to know that Windows keeps a Device Manager entry for every piece of you've ever had on your system! Yes, that's whether or not it still happens to be installed!

There's a "Show Hidden Devices" under View in Window's Device Manager but it doesn't show you these left over (ghost) drivers but you can force it to show you everything by doing the following...
  • Go to Start -> Click Control Panel -> Click System -> Environmental Variables.
  • Under System - Click New -> under Name enter DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES -> enter 1 for Value.
Now, go to your Device Manager...
  • Click Start -> Click System -> Click Hardware -> Click View and choose Show Hidden Devices.
Now, you'll really see everything that's there!

These ghost drivers can cause all sorts of weird problems and it's best to remove unused drivers by right clicking on them and choosing uninstall.
