The utility program built into Windows that lets you keep your computer running smoothly and speed it up at the same time is called Disk Defragmenter. As you add files and programs, the hard disk gradually gets filled up. Uninstalling programs or erasing files create small empty areas among the other data that the computer will re-use. However, at one stage, it can no longer save information in large blocks. Consequently, it puts its data in different tiny areas of the hard disk and gets sluggish in the process. The defragmentation process reunites all the data into large blocks and gathers all the free space on the hard disk into a single block. As a result, data retrieval becomes easier and quicker for the computer. The Windows Built-in Defragmentation Tool
