Rep Power: 5 | Windows XP is sold by Microsoft as a client OS. Active Directory only runs on Windows server OS's, such as Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
What are you trying to accomplish with Active Directory? There may be a workaround. Have you looked at Adam? |

Rep Power: 5 | That depends on what you mean by server and client.
You certainly don't need Active Directory to setup file sharing.
What services do you want the server to provide to the clients?
Have you looked at creating a Windows Workgroup? |

Rep Power: 5 | To do that, you need a domain controller. But, you can't have a domain controller on XP. You need to be running one of the Windows server OS's to be a domain controller.
But let's take one step back. Why would you want to setup a domain? There is most likely some way to accomplish what you want to do that does not involve setting up a domain. What is it that you really want to accomplish? |

Rep Power: 5 | Well, since your requirement #5 is to create a domain, any solution that does not involve creating a domain isn't going to make you happy.
A domain requires a domain controller. |

Rep Power: 0 | Like you said, you can't as you need to have a domain controller to have a domain, but as I smell something there let me add this...
You don't need to have active directory (yes, it's a pain to setup DNS, etc.)
You can have a standalone server and users authenticating themselves there.
In any case you'll have to reinstall the servers, or at least you should.

You can tweak components of your XP using Nlite ( do a search for it if you don't know what it is ). Using Nlite, I have a few XP computers running as file servers. I have no idea if you use it to squeeze out a domain controller, but jthere's an awful lot you can do. |
