Rep Power: 0 | Screensavers - more harm than good? Do you think screensavers are useful?
Personally I find they chew up memory. If I let a screensaver come on, my computer will be much slower when I come back to it.
That sort of defeats the purpose of a screensaver doesnt it |

Rep Power: 3 | no modern day a screen saver is next to pointless any more. they were origionally designed on old school CRT monitors, that after a period of time of showing the same image, it would burn that image in to the screen of the monitor permanetly.
so lets say you let your computer sit on for a day just on the windows desktop screen. when you came back and opened a new screen, you would still see a fain image of your desktop on the screen.
with new CRT's and now the LCD, you do not have to worry about this.
but the screen saver can serve a couple of uses to you. in the work place, you can leave your desk for a min, and your screen saver will come on and you can set it up to where you need a password to use the computer again, so then people passing by when you are not there can not access your files with out your knowledge.
the other use is that they can save energy when you are not at your computer, but dont want to turn it off. by having a dark colored screen saver, or a "balck" (and i mean the color black) screen you will save electricity. your computer shines light at the screen to make it light up. but does not shine in the balck areas , hints why they are black. |

Rep Power: 3 | Hm...good question. I haven't used a screensaver in years. I have a CRT monitor; my screen just goes into a power save mode when it's idle. I think I like that better. Screensavers are just kind of window dressing. |

Rep Power: 0 | More about LCD monitors I thought the light always stays on behind the screen. LCD elements block out the red, green or blue elements that make up each square (pixel) on the screen. When the screen is black, the light really hasn't gone out, it's just that the liquid crystals are blocking all (most) light from getting through.
In power-saving, the backlight should turn off. This usually occurs after a 5 minutes of inactivity and your power light on your LED will change from green to yellow or something similar.

Rep Power: 0 | I don't user screensaver either. My LCD will turn off after some time idle, so there's no need for it. |

Rep Power: 0 | I can't stand seeing a "blank" desktop, so I am using a nice image to make my PC look better. I am aware that it does use some resources, but I cannot have it other way. It would be too bland and sad.

Rep Power: 0 | Problem Hi. I don't think screensavers are much of a problem. If you leave it very long, then it can be hard to get the computer back to work. It happens to me sometimes.
Regards. |

At my workplace I've actually seen several CRT monitors that had an image burned into them. They actually looked like they were still on! The primary use for my screensave is to lock my computer.

Rep Power: 2 | Screensavers are pointless these days, much better to simply set the power savings to turn off monitor after a certain period of inactivity, can also be set to require password to log back on so that takes care of secuirty issue |
