Tips on clean the registry

I know there are people that will wonder how to clean the registry. There was a topic a few posts down called "Clearing the registry". I seen that and read through it and I thought I would make a new post of tips about clean the registry.

First tip is. Make sure you back up your registry. That is the most important tip of them all. If you delete the registry key, there's a chance you can mess up your whole computer. I know most if not all program backup the registry for you before you clean it keys it finds, but I don't trust that all that well. I bet most of you are asking how do I backup my registry? Here's how. Click Start , click Run, type in the box Regedit. That should open the windows registry. Now Under File click Export (you can also right click My Computer to get to export), now pick a name ( like to use the date), pick a location and click Save. There you backed up your registry.

The second tip is to only remove the keys you know that's safe. Mostly remove program keys you un-installed and don't have the program on your computer any more. Most registry cleaners will have other stuff that the cleaner says is safe to remove. I don't trust it. I only remove keys that belonged to a program I un-installed.

The last isn't really a tip it's a warning. Messing with the registry is dangerous and should be avoided if at all possible.

Please feel free to add other tips if you want.

Do you only recommend using 3rd party programs for this like the ones talked about in this forum?

Its rather hard to manipulate the registry without some other software in my opinion.

I don't recommend Messing with the registry at all. If you know what you're doing, yes go ahead and use a third party app. I would use RegSeeker or JV16 power tools. Them apps seem to be safe. I used both of them before and I still do use JV16 power tools. Make sure you backup the registry. If you're afraid to do it the way I said, well use the backup function of the third party app. you're using.

When you're making a backup of your registry, where is the best place to save it? I'm assuming on an external storage device.

Yeah somewhere off the computer
Obviously if the computer crashes you may not be able to access the hard drive.
Just burn it to CD or something, you most likely wont need it anyway.
