Rep Power: 3 | Tweak the Prefetch 1. Run "Regedit"
2. Goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher]
3. Set the value to either 0-Disable, 1-App launch prefetch, 2-Boot Prefetch, 3-Both ("3" is recommended).
4. Reboot.
It will decrease the boot time but double and increase the performance of your XP. |

Rep Power: 5 | Note that all of this pre-fetching will only benefit you if your system has plenty of RAM.
If your system doesn't have enough RAM, the pre-fetched data will just be discarded when RAM fills up with normal applications and data. |

Rep Power: 3 | How much RAM would be needed for this?
Most people have 512MB standard these days, is that enough? |

Rep Power: 5 | That depends upon what applications you run, and how many of them you run concurrently.
I have a gig of RAM in the laptop, and I'm complaining that I need more. ops: |

Rep Power: 3 | haha. Well I only run email, Office, web browsers, and MSN.
I guess if you are running Photoshop, etc... you will run into RAM problems. |

Rep Power: 3 | My machine runs on a 256MB ram and i am quite happy with it. I do use Dreamweaver MX,Photoshop(runs slow), Visual Studio.NET 2003,as usual the messenger and mails stuff.
If we can control the background process that are running 256mb is pretty good for normal usage.Just we have to tweak our system well enough.Like i dont use XP themes and i find huge boost to the performance.I use minimal appearance effects and they all make my system optimized to work with. |

Rep Power: 3 | Prefetch I use a program called Windows Washer by Webroot. This single program saves you SO many steps in cleaning out your computer of temp and unnecessary files. I bought it for like $30.00, but there is a free trial offer. It cleans out your computer, in one simple step, of all temp and uncessary files virtually anywhere on your computer, and it also has a bleaching option, so these files could never be recovered. I never have anything in my prefetch folder while using this program. I feel it is a "must have" and recommend it to everyone. |
