Rep Power: 6 | Vista Build 5472 Shows Steady Progress Vista Build 5472 Shows Steady Progress
By Jason Brooks
July 19, 2006
eWEEK Labs got a hold of Vista Build 5472 on July 18, loaded it up on a test machine and took a quick tour.
Microsoft officials told us that a Vista Release Candidate 1 build will be arriving by the end of the quarter. You can expect a more comprehensive review of the new operating system at that time, but, for now, we'll share some notes from our 5472 experience.

Rep Power: 3 | Why bother?
It needs more system resources than Half Life 2. What was wrong with Windows 95? We don't need stupid hi-res graphics on the operating system |

Rep Power: 6 | Well, Windows 95 crashed constantly. That was certainly one downside!
Other improvements since Win95 include PnP hardware support, better networking support (including IPv6), and OS level security. |

Rep Power: 3 | WinXP crashes constantly! Or it doesn't crash, it just closes programs when it feels like it. It also likes to help itself to all of your system resources...but then Windows always has.
I never had problems with Win95, of course I don't like Windows in general but my prefered version is 95C with all the neccersary addons/fixes to make it do what Win98 did.
I wouldn't call networking in XP better, as with most things, it's gone even more wizard based. Security in Windows is a joke as it's always been.
Sure a few things have been added in XP and probably will in Vista but we don't need all the resource hogging graphics to go with it, I mean an operating system that needs a 128mb graphics card is simply stupid. The coloured menus and things they put into XP weren't even needed, Win9x looked fine. But of course, all of the dumb computer users we have these days wouldn't buy the new version if it didn't look different would they? Most computer users these days wouldn't buy a new version of an OS if you told them it had better hardware support, IPv6 etc, but put a new hi-res GUI on it and they'll rush out to get it.
In ways I don't like how computers have become popular, now even stupid people can use computers and therefore software and hardware is designed for stupid people, things like WinXP, Playstations and all of that do everything for you so computer users are becoming more and more stupid because they don't actually know how to do things. They'd probably be amazed that at one time to play a game you had to sit loading it from a tape listening to all the code go through or sit installing it swapping between 12 floppy disks, some people these days get stuck if the Windows autorun doesn't popup a nice menu for them when they put the disc in. |

Rep Power: 6 | The computer is only a tool. As such, using it is a process goal - not an end goal.
Life is not about how you use the tools -- it's about what you do with them. |
