Vista delayed?

Is it true that Windows Vista has been delayed until 2007? If so, I am actually glad for this delay

Microsoft announced late Tuesday that it was delaying the release of Windows Vista until January of 2007.

I don't really care when they release it; I just hope that it works when it is released.

I hope they will take their time and release something that doesn't require tons of bug fixes right away

I am glad that they have delayed Vista, there are too many Windows versions as is, and we don't really NEED another one.

I was a little disappointed that I couldn't get a shiny new toy for Christmas, but I suppose I can wait for January. I am looking forward to having a brand new computer with Vista on it. My current computer/XP is perfectly functional, but I can't resist being able to have one that is all shiny and new.

So much fun to learn a new OS.

Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell says a slip in Vista's release to Q2 2007 will cost Microsoft between $200 and $400 Million dollars.

$200M would pay for a whole lot of software development.

Probably they will release it before it's finished in test and then let buyers work out the bugs on their own dimes.

haha I won't even be bothering to get a pirate copy of Vista just to try it out, it's not even worth the cd/dvd it's burnt to.

I've now lost all of the slight interest I ever had with anything Microsoft do.

Microsoft Hedges On Vista Deadline
By Gregg Keizer, TechWeb
Thu. July 27, 2006

Microsoft Corp. on Thursday continued to send mixed signals about Windows Vista's ship date, claiming that it was on track to deliver the new operating system in early 2007 but also repeating that it wouldn't release Vista until it was satisfied with the software's quality.

At Microsoft's annual financial analyst's conference in Redmond, Wash., Kevin Johnson, co-president of the company's platforms and services group, addressed Vista's ship date.

"We will ship Windows Vista when the product is ready," he said. "[But] product quality is job one.

"There's no data or information that says we are not going to make the November business availability or the January [2007] consumer availability," said Johnson in one breath. In the next, he added "However, we are going to ship the product when it's ready. We are just going to take it milestone by milestone."

Microsoft's Bigger Vista Mistake

Microsoft's Bigger Vista Mistake

We've heard from the top: Microsoft tried doing too much, too soon, when it undertook the development of Windows Vista. At least that's the line that Microsoft head-honcho Steve Ballmer is spinning.

Is it too much or just not managing expectations?

Last night, Ballmer explained Microsoft's overreach to analysts.

"We made an upfront decision that was, I'll say, incredibly strategic and brilliant and wise--and was not implementable," said Ballmer. "We tried to incubate too many new innovations and integrate them simultaneously, as opposed to letting them bake and then integrating them, which is essentially where we wound up."

Let's be frank, Microsoft had no choice in taking on more than it could chew. When it took the wraps off Longhorn in 2002, it was on the eve of launching Windows Server 2003 and losing a battle of attrition with malware writers and hackers around the world. End users were going crazy -- and broke -- trying to keep up with the constant barrage of patches for Windows NT, 98/SE and 2000; bug hunters -- people who search for application vulnerabilities -- were making mincemeat out of the newly released Windows XP. The chief security officer of a top 10 bank relayed to me a conversation she had with Bill Gates: "Either you fix this or we're going to find a replacement."

Microsoft to Pay Reparations for Vista, Office Delays

Microsoft is working on a new reparations strategy, known internally as a customer incentive program, for those customers with volume licensing programs who will be negatively affected by the delay in the release of Windows Vista and Office 2007.

Most enterprises buy volume licensing agreements from Microsoft, along with Software Assurance, which guarantees them the rights to all upgrades for any product covered by the agreement while it is in force.

But even if Microsoft sticks to its current timetable for the delivery of Vista and Office 2007, the delays mean that some customers who bought Software Assurance and who would have qualified for those upgrades if they had shipped as originally expected will not get them before their contracts expire.

PointerMicrosoft recently started telling its hardware and software partners that its goal is to release Windows Vista and Office 2007 simultaneously in January. Click here to read more.

As such, the Redmond software maker is going to have to make amends through rebates, incentives and the like, to encourage those Software Assurance customers who have now ended up on the wrong side of the licensing tracks through no fault of their own to renew.

How many out here have used LongHorn ?
Never heard much about it.... i got a pirated copy of the OS ..but it was not so impressive...! Also it took too much time getting installed.

I hope Vista will be cool and much more safer to use from security and privacy angle !

I think its going to be overpriced, Im not keen on really upgrading unless I have to and I am happy with XP now.
So I will be waiting until the cost comes down a bit.

I wouldn't wait for Vista, but if possible I would wait for Intel's new Merom chips to hit the mainstream.
