Windows just shuts down

At work when I try surfing a certain web site (I know I shouldn't be surfing at work) I'll get a windows error and it'll close. We run win98 (ancient). I ran a scan and nothing. Does anyone know what's going on?

(I moved your post to our new "Troubleshooting" forum. Thanks for the suggestion! )

See if it has to do with particular site you're browsing.

There are a couple of sites that recently added this weird "Windows" pop up. One site is crapville.com which has all sorts of funny videos. Anyway, the pop up calls itself "Window Installer" and appears to want me to download it. When I say cancel...cancel... cancel... my browser closes! Whether or not it's malicious piece of software I don't know. BUT, since I don't know what the heck it is, I'm not going to allow it onto my computer!

I showed the site/popup to my IT man at work and he said he didn't like it. He too wasn't sure what was but when he looked at their source code he saw that some info was hidding. Hmm!

Anway, see if it has to do with the site you're visiting... is it happening on the same site everytime??

if you signed a business use only doucment when hired you may have signed your own pink slip. Those closure notifications go to a network admin who uses their own good or bad judgement about when to make a big deal out of it.

Also, those sites do not carefully police their outgoing virus or malware, and i could just see people spamming the crap onto the site for the next guy.

securiy violations are of concern to companies because viral thieves don;t want what's on your folder, they want your bossess, and your bosses boss resident files.

Imagine explaining why the quarterly report got leaked to the internet 3 weeks early because Judkins wanted to surf irresponsibly.

Good luck getting another job after that.

Yes, if you could be a bit more specific it would help alot..

What I hate are the sites that use popups designed to look like Windows dialog boxes hoping you'll click on them...
Thank God my popup blocker gets rid of most of that garbage.

Whenever I 'surf" the net.......to sites I never been to......I de-activate both "cookies" & "active scripting". I'm using IE 6.0 & FireFox 1.5

I don't ever worry about "pop-up" because pop-ups are written using "scripts"....therefor.......de-activate both "cookies" & "active scripting".

Hope that helps !!

Well, one type of popups the blockers can't block are those that use DHTML..

I actually don't mind a popup or two, so long as they "behave"... I hate those that flash and dance and well, you get the idea..

What is the error that is showing up?

I don't know if my case was similar to yours, but before that happened to me as well and I scanned my system and found out it was caused by a virus.

What antivirus are you using? Try scanning your system with a second one just to be sure, or download updates of your current one.

I was talking to someone very recently actually and he had this problem with his home computer. He couldn't understand why it kept on shutting down when he was on the internet. The only difference though was it was a brand new computer and PCWorld took it back in and fixed it.

I don't think that it would have anything to do with the website though. To be able to do that the website would have somehow had to get past the firewall to shut down the computer.
