Rep Power: 0 | Is your PC slow? Computers perform best when they receive regular, professional maintenance. The installation and un-installation of software, hardware, and drivers often leave remnants behind in your registry, resulting in a tangle of unused applications, broken drivers, and incomplete and empty command signals. This mass of confusion slows down your computer and if not addressed promptly can lead to serious problems such as computer freezing, programs not responding, and system crashes.
Thanks |

Rep Power: 0 | If you've installed and uninstalled a lot of programs and are having slow down problems like this are there any programs you would recomend to try and correct things?

Rep Power: 3 | Just don't use one with alot of BAD reviews. They can seriously screw up your comp by deleting those important files.

JV16 will go as deep as you let it, and bring up everything it feels is "trash". Some prog's don’t run everyday and registry search tools sometimes read this as "not in use" anymore. So be careful, keep the setting within your knowledge. Learn the registry before you start messing around there.
There are other reasons for lag besides registry probs. A proper defrag tool is a must. I use Diskeeper Pro. It allows you to set MFT and page file settings after it reads your drive and then suggests changes which you can accept or not. It has never failed me.
Startup proggys also drag your puter down. Every software designer believes their product should be the most important prog in your sys. So most default to your startup dir, and run in the background without most people knowing it, stealing precious resources needlessly.
Another problem is an overfilled HDD. Just because you have a 200G hard drive doesn’t mean you can put 200 gigs on it and expect it to run properly. Progs need room to open, to expand and if they are stuffed they wont run properly.
I personally keep my c:\ at 60% or below and except for my desktop and My Docs do not store files on it. I have storage drives setup (swapable) and these should never be at above 80%. I keep mine at 70% or below. Even though progs are not running in them they still need to be defragged as I move stuff around, add, delete etc. If they are at less than 20% free space the defrag app cant sort properly.
These things are just what work for me and are subject to different circumstances on other peoples boxes.
My theory... lean and clean. Keep your box skinned back from heavy progs that want invasive access to your system. Piggy progs steal resources and weaken your defenses.
BlackViper has some great info on setting up windows to meet your needs. Google it.
Peace,
Cyberian |

Rep Power: 0 | Task Manager Related Are all of those "processes" I see running in Task Manager directly tied to the Registry? How do I get rid of some of the stuff I see eating up memory before my very eyes? |

Rep Power: 6 | I don't think all are tied to the reg but bits are added when you add software. I'm not sure 'bout hardware and/or incidental (small bits of) software like.... IM stuff... Yahoo, MSN...etc.
What processes do you have running? Do you know how to take a screen shot? So you don't have to list each one.

Rep Power: 0 | OK, I made 2 separate screen shots in Paint (bmp) but each one exceeds the max size to upload to this site. There are 36 processes running when I am online. Not sure how to get the images uploaded - I think Paint is the only image program I am running right now and don't have much time to pluck through it line by line to type into a text file. |

Rep Power: 3 | I know this is totaly inappropriate and way off topic, but everytime I see this thread title, I start to sing to myself,
is your pc slow?, does it wobble to and fro?,
can you tie it in a knot? can you tie it in a bow?
can you throw it over your shoulder like a Continental soldier?
can you do the double shuffle when your pc slows?
sorry, but its true, for the past two weeks, every day when I vist this forum, so I had to share, in hopes it will stop, or if not, and you know what song that is supposed to be, you will sing along with me now

My co-workers think I'm a little nutty but they're also impressed with my knowledge of some pretty OLD songs.... err, old for my age!
